For more than 130 years, Authors has been an American favorite. This bridge-sized deck can be used for any playing card game or you can play the original game. Similar to Go Fish, the original Authors game has players collecting "books" of authors. A book is a set of 4 identical author cards. Play continues until all books are collected. The player with the most at the end of the game is the winner.

Authors include:

  • Mark Twain
  • Charles Dickens
  • William Makepeace Thackeray
  • Robert Lewis Stevenson
  • William Shakespeare
  • James Fenimore Cooper
  • Washington Irving
  • Nathaniel Hawthorne
  • Henry Wordsworth Longfellow
  • Sir Walter Scott
  • Alfred, Lord Tennyson
  • Louisa May Alcott
  • Edgar Allen Poe

It is a regular card and a challenging set of flash cards in one. You can play regular Go Fish, Authors (you have to match the autor AND book, very challenging), or any of your other favorite card games. Not only did my friends and I have fun playing, it inspired us to talk about books and writing. Makes a great gift.

As a child, I loved to play this easily portable game. I always felt that that early familiarity with the pictures and names and works of the selected authors gave me an advantage in future literature classes. As a grandmother, I snatched up the game the first time I saw it those many years later, to have available as educational and fun entertainment when grandchildren would visit. It quickly became a favorite, even with one who was just learning to read and spell and pronounce words. For the child who is almost nine years old now, it remains a favorite, even sustaining him somewhat when he and I were separated from one another during the evacuation displacement of Hurricane Katrina. We still enjoy playing it whenever we are together, and he now has his own set he plays with his friends. I\'ve liked both the American set, and an international authors set.
