Agricola is a farming and economic game, set in the 17th century: A very difficult time for the farming occupation. Players attempt to rise from subsistence living to a more comfortable way of life, through gradual planning and cunning strategy. All players begin with a two member family (themselves and a spouse), residing in a two-room wooden hut. Since each member of the family may chose one action, it becomes advantageous to enlarge the family unit. The draw back to this is that more food must be produced in order to feed the family members. Balance is important in order to maintain the many facets of an expanding farm. There will be fields to plow, seeds to be planted, crops to be harvested, animal husbandry, and buildings and fences to be maintained. The occupation and improvement cards can give players an extra advantage, although sometimes a player may have to go off course and change his/her strategy. This game uses victory points to reward successes in farming and upgrades in structures, while points are lost for unused farmyard spaces. Points are tabulated at the end of the 14th round (after the harvest), and the player with the highest victory points is the winner!
